Summary/Abstract: The Romanian Orthodox Church has intensified its efforts to obtain autocephalous status after the Union of the Romanian Principalities. In this context the number of requests received from the Romanian hierarchy, in order to recognize the Romanian Orthodox Church’s autocephaly by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, rose significantly since the previous period. The results came only after two and a half decades. The Romanian clergy's efforts to obtain recognition of the Romanian Orthodox Church’s Autocephaly were also supported diplomatically by some Romanian politicians. On 25th April 1885 the Ecumenical Patriarchate recognized the autocephalous status of the Romanian Orthodox Church that represented a very important step in shaping its future.
