General and Legal Meaning of Civil Society in Hungary from the Beginning till 1989

Summary/Abstract: This essay tries to show examples from the history of civil society in Hungary so we could point out some of the general and long-lasting tendencies of the sector. One of the most durable tendencies was the occasional, incoherent nature of the all time regulations: it seems that the lack of truly customised and comprehensive regulation was the chronic illness of Hungarian non-profit sector – before 1989.
