Summary/Abstract: A dialogue between the journalist and essayist Jonathan Schell and Tom Engelhardt, editor of “Tomdispatch.com”, on the nuclear threat since the Cold War. During all this period there have existed no adequate policies to efficiently prevent this threat. Adding to the picture, two erroneous ideas have inspired any measures taken in this respect. The illusory idea (starting with the so-called American “monopoly” of 1945 over the atomic bomb) that the bomb can be “nationalized”, meaning it could remain the exclusive property of a limited group of countries, and an equally erroneous but also dangerous idea, according to which a country or a group of allies could get and preserve the upper hand in this domain.
