Summary/Abstract: While “longing” is a fundamental and legitimate anthropological state of mind, nostalgia represents a form of mourning and was pinned as a concept in the XVII century when doctors considered it to be an illness that could be cured. Nevertheless, the feeling it defines has always existed. The question is whether sentiments precede the notions that express them or we become aware of their existence only after we have named them. An excursion in medical treaties and literature tries to answer this question with highlights on human relations, exile and psychiatry.
