Summary/Abstract: Matei Millo's theatrical activity was very versatile, showing himself as author, scene director, troupe leader, teacher. In 1836 he was the director of the National Theatre from Iasi and in 1853 he was the artistic director of the National Theatre in Bucharest. In 1846 he returned to Iasi, and together with Nicolae Sutu took the lead of the National Theatre of the town. They also established the so called "The Rhapsodic School" for the initiation and training of the young actors. Matei Millo's Babylonian legacy consists of the theatre lessons offered through the parts he performed on stage and also of his involvement in the stage direction area. The different methods of role building, his own approach on characters were used through a technique, promoted by him, that underlined the necessity of detail observation, as one studies the human character. Between 1864-1866 he worked as a teacher within the Conservatory from Bucharest teaching mimicry and declamation. His fame was also great in the capital city. Matei Millo created a school just through his presence within the theatre. What made him so popular were parts like Chiriţa, Mother Angheluşa, Raw Head and Bloody Bones, Ciubăr din Despot-Vodă, Barbu The Fiddler by V. Alecsandri, Shylock from The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare, Sancho Panza from Don Quijote by Cervantes.
