Summary/Abstract: Looking at the relation between the place of birth and current residential locations of foreign citizens arriving in Hungary from the neighbouring countries, in general we established that persons with lower level of educational attainment are mainly concerned by smaller migration distance, while migrants with higher educational attainment migrate for longer distances. The potential impact area of migrants grows along with educational attainment of migrants. Immigration to Hungary from the neighbouring countries shows a scale-free settlement topology. Most settlements of Hungary have just a few connections to settlements of neighbouring countries in migration point of view, while few Hungarian settlements have multiple connections. This finding also means that instead of the national migration strategy, subsidiary and the regional strategies can play a decisive role in the management of international migration process.
