Summary/Abstract: Monetary integration was one of the major challenges of European integration, first in the Community and then the European Union. Practical realization of the EMU is connected with the fulfi llment of the convergence criteria, which in practice require the implementation of stabilization programs by next countries joining the single currency area, which currently consist of 18 countries. The financial crisis has highlighted the uneven level of development of the euro area and its implications for their economics situation during this difficult period. The effects of a global recession also emphasized the need for financial solidarity of members of the euro area and its implications for the entire European Union. Entry into force and implementation of “THE EURO PLUS PACT” will certainly, in the near term, determine the development of the situation for the euro area countries and also specify the position of the countries remaining outside it, including Poland.
