Summary/Abstract: In Lithuanian historical word formation, many suffixes are reconstructed in a twofold shape, with and without -s-, e. g., -las and -slas. The author argues that this can be explained by reanalysis: Lith. ėslus is not derived from *ėd-slus but contains the suffix -lus, whereas the stem form ės- instead of ėd- arose by reanalysis in forms like ėsti, where the cluster -st- arises from dissimilation. In this way, lots of Lithuanian stems in dentals have acquires alternative forms in -s-.
