Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the treatment of the so-called Laryngalhiat in Baltic and Slavonic. These are cases where a laryngeal was lost between a high vowel i or u and a suffixal vowel. This constellation is characteristic of zero grade formations based on roots of the type *Cei9H-/*Ci9eH- or *Ceu9H-/*Cu9eH-. When a vocalic suffix is added to a full grade root of the type *CeH-, the laryngeal leaves no trace (its loss leading to contraction or the rise of a secondary diphthong), whereas a similar situation involving the loss of a laryngeal after i, u produces a hiatus subsequently eliminated in Baltic and Slavonic by insertion of a homorganic glide i9, u9.
