Summary/Abstract: The etymology of the suppletive Lithuanian 3rd person present form of the substantive verb yra is still debated. In this this article it is pointed out that pronominal stems are a frequent source for both copulae and coordinative conjunctions. The author argues that the similarity between Lith. ir ‘and’ and yra ‘is’ is probably not a coincidence and that both words could go back to a demonstrative pronominal stem.
