Summary/Abstract: REVIEW ARTICLE: Overt or Subconscious Nationalism? Some Comments Provoked by Paul Robert Magocsi's "A History of Ukraine" In Polish-Ukrainian relations, the differences in the perception and interpretation of history cause fewer tensions than in Poland’s relations with Germany and especially with Russia. This is quite an achievement, considering the still not fully healed wounds inflicted by both parties on each other in the first half of the 20th century. There are of course many reasons for this state of affairs. The Ukrainians never occupied Poland and the worst of those blistering wounds, the genocide committed by UPA on Polish civilian population inhabiting Volhynia and parts of Eastern Galicia, is not nearly as present in Polish historical consciousness as the German or Soviet crimes. On the other hand, the experience of Russian domination and the actions of be it Tsarist, be it Soviet authorities left an incomparably stronger imprint on the vast majority of Ukrainians than the reminiscences of Polish hegemony.
