Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the life of the Czech writer and journalist Jiří Weil during the Nazi occupation, focusing on the genesis of his best-known novel “Mendelssohn on the roof”/„Mendelssohn auf dem Dach”. His book is a belletristic approach of the tragedy of the Czech Jews. The occupied Prague is very well described in the novel. Kryl analyses the motives in the book and places the novel in the context of other Weil´s works. Weil had a great deal of problems with getting his book published due to the post-1948 communist censorship. Finally his book, which was quite successful, was printed with some changes in 1960, after Weil´s death in 1959.
