Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the life and the crimes of Richard Hermann Skarabis, often erroneously marked as the first commandant of Terezin. Skarabis joined the SS as early as 1932. Between 1940 and 1941, he worked for the Umwandererzentrale (UWZ) at Posen. In October 1941 he was transferred to the Protectorate, to assist with the genesis of the Terezin ghetto. In the end, it was his UWZ colleague Siegfried Seidl, who after internal competition won the job of ghetto commandant. Afterwards he acted at the UWZ again, survived the war and grew old in the BDR, only marginally troubled by trials. The article discusses in detail Skarabis’ function at Terezin and the link between the deportations specialists in annected Western Polish territories and the “Eichmann men”.
