Summary/Abstract: In the autumn of 1989, two phenomena collided: the Gorbachev factor and the collapse of the communist system under pressure from societies. It is an irony of history that nothing would have happened if Gorbachev had not resigned himself to the abdication of imperial logic, known as the Brezhnev doctrine, which legitimized the supreme right of the Soviet Union over the other Europe , In fact, Gorbachev could not have intervened in Eastern Central Europe without compromising his determination to reform the USSR, thus destroying his image as a man of perestroika. This image, however, was a condition as well as a result of his policy of opening up to the west.
