Summary/Abstract: Within the Western Balkans region, Bosnia and Herzegovina was faced with the most complex situation, both during and after the war. The 1991-1995 war was waged mainly in the territory of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This has naturally led to great devastation of its infrastructure and its economic wealth. And, what is even worse, there was destruction not only of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also of its multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multicultural society. The task of this paper would be to analyze overall political, economic and socio-cultural situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This needs to be done with the aim of detecting the causes of current trends of exclusion in the region, and particularly the position of Bosnia and Herzegovina in that context. In addition, we need to see to what extent the war has slowed down the development of democracy, the rule of law and the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, which is the ‘conditio sine qua non’ the stability of the system, as well as an incentive to the process of integration and, at the same time, for the process of suppression of disintegration processes. Certainly, democratization of relations between the states of this region is one of the key prerequisites for the fostering of economic integration, trade and the attainment of joint interests. All of it, together with the active role of the civil society, would enable Bosnia and Herzegovina, to intensify the process of accession to the European Union and NATO so that the processes of integration would be strengthened in that respect as well, since it is the key condition for the security, prosperity and the lasting peace in the region of Western Balkans, and consequently of the Balkan region as a whole.
