Summary/Abstract: The article claims that only realists can truly hope. The „great anthropocentric shift” of the modern era, as Pope John Paul II described it, not only replaced realism with subjectivism, but in doing so, also endangered authentic hope. This claim is supported by the following sequence of contents. First, the nature of hope as a self-transcending act is described, which entirely distinguishes hope from the typical contrast between optimism and pessimism. Second, hope’s intrinsic relation to metaphysical, epistemological, and moral realism refers to reality (metaphysical realism), which is to some extent rationally intelligible (epistemological realism) and the real difference between moral and immoral acts can be known (moral realism). Third, various manifestations of modern anthropocentrism’s hopelessness are articulated, such as the threats to democracy and critical thinking that arise with the loss of epistemological realism, and the “animal rights” confusion, which emerges from the loss of moral realism. Fourth, the essay finishes by explaining how realism and genuine hope can address and correct these modern conditions of hopelessness.
