The First and the Second Book of Samuel as Part of The Archival Chronograph

(Preliminary Observations )

Summary/Abstract: This article studies the First and the Second Book of Samuel as part of The Archival Chronograph - a Russian manuscript from the 15th century (RGADA, Moscow, f. 181, № 279/658). The text of these biblical books, which were undoubtedly part of The Archival Chronograph, is analyzed in comparison both with the Greek text and the Slavonic copies which go beyond the content of The Archival Chronograph. Some preliminary observations are made concerning the dating of the Slavonic translation. The exploration establishes the presence of the following features: three Glagolitic letters (2 Samuel 1:21 äожь, 2 Samuel 3:21 даâыд, 1 Kings 1:45 ïомзаста), ancient word-formation models (дѫгатъ, годище), a rare lexeme (воиньствие), hapax legomena (валка, възѧтити сѧ, Tπιγαμβρеύω, омрьзъчати, скъімати ψιθυριζω), and proto-Bulgarian words (хорѫгъі, кръчии, кръчагъ, колъімогъ, капь, кънигъчии). The lexeme сълъіга|солъіга βόλις ‘spear, arrow’ (1 Samuel 14:14) is suggested to have Altaic etymology on the ground of existing parallels with Mongolian and Manchu-Tungus languages.
