Summary/Abstract: The Fogarassy Institute for Girls functioned in Gheorgheni (Gyergyószentmiklós) between 1876 and 1948. The events of both the World War I and the period that followed had a determinant influence on the institute’s educational activity. On the other hand the events from the school show an accurate image of the social processes and transformations of the period under discussion. We can witness the ”changing empire”, we can study the accommodation of the Hungarian minority to the Romanian political system. This essay follows the events from 1914 until the 1920’s, aiming to reveal both the local Hungarian and the general Romanian interest about a provincial school. The analyzes depicts the way how an ecclesiastical school became an institute with its main goal the conservation of the national identity of the Hungarians of the town.
