Summary/Abstract: The presence of poetry in Sándor Makkai ‘s works is like an underground stream, appearing from time to time, then disappearing for a longer period. However, taking in view Makkai ‘s art of writing poetry, we have to consider that his poems are a way of self-creation as well as a modality of resolving tension. He can not reach beyond experimenting in either of his periods of writing poetry. He abandons it before he would develop it to completeness. The real success in his literary career is brought by other genres: the novel and the essay.
