Summary/Abstract: Succeeding in unstable conditions does not depend on one factor (effectiveness) any more; but requires the possession of numerous equal advantages: the ability to react quickly; innovativeness; operational excellence; close relations with customers; the ability to attract the best employees; the ability to create values. All these characteristics are crucial for a successful company whose fundamental creed is the effective adaptability to changing environment. The aim of the article is to identify the attributes of success of the outstanding companies with special attention to their ability to build competitive advantage. The concept of an agile company was examined in the context of challenges for modern companies which come from the environment. The identification of the competitive advantage building process was essayed; taken into account agility as a concept deeply rooted in the theory of management and developed in order to adapt to the environment and its changes.
