Summary/Abstract: The present article concerns the problem of the development of the rhetoric as a part of the logic (scientia sermocinalis) in the Middle Ages, by means of an analysis of the different divisio philosophiae. It is proved here that the rhetoric is in principle assigned to ligic; this is the picture during the whole period of the Middle Ages, and it is not just a consequence of some Arabic and neo-platonic influences in the thirtheenth century. After that, a conception of the rhetorical syllogism, or the enthymeme, is examined – as a syllogism of a kind but not as a kind of sillogism. Next, the article poses the question of the overturning of the traditional notion of the rhetoric as ‘a smaller sister of the dialectic’, accomplished by Thomas Aquinas.
