Summary/Abstract: When one speaks of the poems of Mahadevi Varma there always seems to be an element of enigma. They exemplify the centuries-long politics of writing which is particular to Hindi poets, that is – the politics which allowed them to treat themes generally thought as taboo and therefore not accepted as “proper” for literature. This kind of politics was needed mainly for treating themes relating to love, especially the carnal love and physical desire.
