Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with Željko Mardešić ( Jakov Jukić), one of the founders of the sociology of religion in the former Yugoslavia. The author seeks to highlight some of the more significant dimensions of his exemplary Christian way of life and scholarly opus. In his penitent, humble Christian way, Mardešić spoke out boldly against the denigration of reason, goodness and moral responsibility in this world. From this perspective, he spoke critically against ideology, the ideological manipulation of religion and the churches, and the emergence of political and occult religiosity, advocating instead dialogue and the rehabilitatn tion of the world’s religions and civilizations.
