Summary/Abstract: At the crossroads of 1 Decembrie 1918, Victoriei and Galaţi Streets, in Tecuci City, there stands a noticeable house built at the end of the 19th century, probably between 1887 and 1888, by the architect I. Ieşanu (or Eşanu), house which belonged to Nicolae L. Pelin, “a butcher merchant”. The Pelins were a wealthy family, their income residing in estates in Tecuci as well as in shares in Tecuci Bank, all of these being inherited by the 3 children of Nicolae L. Pelin, as well as by his wife, Zoe N. Pelin. The building on 2 Galaţi Street was, since 1932, the property of his daughter, Elena, teacher, married to lieutenant I. Rutza, from Tecuci. In 1982 she sold the building to the Pensioners’ Mutual Aid Fund from Tecuci which, in its turn, sold it, in 2010, to a natural person. In the first two decades of the 20th century, the building housed the members of the French military mission led by General Berthelot and, after the end of World War I, it hosted Nicolae Iorga, president of the Cultural League. The style of the construction pertains to the eclectic-urban architecture. Its plastic-decorative elements follow the standards of French neoclassicism. Its roof stands out through its high, pyramid-shaped dome. For the plastics of its facades, for the harmony of its architectural compositions, the building was considered as representative and was ranked among the historical monuments of the town.
