Summary/Abstract: The study analyses from a historical perspective the dispute between the Romanian Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church regarding the issue of the canonical jurisdiction over Bessarabia, a territory annexed by the Russian Empire in 1812, which had been part of the Romanian Principality of Moldavia till then. The authors highlight the moments when the issue of Bessarabia was brought into debate, the canonical and historical arguments used in time by each side to defend their position, the political and identitary implications of this church-related issue. The dispute has not found a definitive solution yet, still remaining a “pending” issue, with a potential for revival.
