Summary/Abstract: Folklore knowledge is one of the subsystems of folklore, whether the latter is intended as a specific type of culture, or as an applied artistic activity. The article offers an initial theoretical analysis of several parameters of this subsystem, such as subject and object of folklore knowledge, systemic characteristics, principles of functioning. Historically, folklore knowledge shows similarity to the principles of mythological thinking, but at the same time it bears the features of a qualitatively new stage in the cognitive activity of mankind. The most essential characteristic of folklore knowledge is its artistic and imagerial nature. Every individual artistic image in folklore is only a part, an element of the total picture of folklore knowledge, which is the basis and result of cognitive activity and molds a specific folklore “image of the world”. In its functional aspect folklore knowledge is characterized by polysemantics of the artistic imagery, open semantic connections and a comprehensive but not arbitrary field of associations.
