Summary/Abstract: The concept of sustainable development provides new interesting research perspectives in spatial analysis. The aim of the study is to assess the sustainable development of Polish regions in terms of diversity and directions of changes. The hypothesis assumes that despite the gradual process of convergence in the development of individual EU member states, the differentiation increases in regional scale within economic, social and environmental indicators. The study covers the years 1999-2007. The main conclusion is that the growing socio-economic differentiation occurs simultaneously with the equalization of environmental impact by each region. The poorest regions lose their competitive advantage provided by clean environment while not catch up the richest ones in the economic terms.
