Insurance against natural disasters

Summary/Abstract: Ever more frequent natural disasters can be a syndrome of ecological crisis. Various causes, such as: weather abnormalities, investments in the natural floodplains and failures in the spatial planning increase flood losses. When in case of low-probability and highloss events technical and non-technical measures are not enough, than risk transfer methods become efficient in the restoration after an extreme event. The paper presents the methods of floods risk adaptation used in Poland, such as risk management and insurance against natural catastrophes, with the focus on the advantages and disadvantages of the latest. The discussion on insurance options that are possible to implement is presented with conclusions on challenges that the insurance against natural catastrophes faces in Poland.
