Economic efficiency of investment on areas of special flood-related hazards

Summary/Abstract: River valleys are from the beginnings of mankind, a place of intense human activity. Natural disasters, such as floods, have a negative impact on the profitability of investments in areas where they might occur. Avoidance strategy in relation to the flood risk is a less popular approach than active prevention of flood losses through the application of technical and organizational measures. Increased investors’ knowledge about the risk of flood, which could be increased by a tool like this for example flood hazard and risk maps, leads to taking better informed decisions. The paper presents a method, results and conclusions of the simulations of financial and economic performance of selected investments in areas with different probabilities of floods occurrence. A discussion of results and conclusions can be helpful in the design of flood policy instruments, such as bans on constructions within floodplains.
