Summary/Abstract: Among the aspects of individual liberty, we think the case of the voluntary waiver of a right for which people have been fighting along history is especially interesting. Nevertheless within the anonymous life the annals do not register there were many individuals who chose to be slaves for different reasons. For a long period of time, the Romanian archives have kept many documents of self-sale of some people. In this study we are interested in the concrete conditions such cases produced more than 200 years ago, in order to understand the basis of the mentality today, regarding the sense of freedom and giving it up.
