Summary/Abstract: It has been said that Maupassant’s writings are characterized by clarity, lightness and transparency; thus, the reader passes through a strong effect of reality. But, as clear water, transparency hides a depth which is sometimes alarming, being especially revealed in almost all of the fantastic short stories. These ones continue in part romantic supernatural literature. Anyhow, the writer’s originality is due to the means he uses to build the unspeakable, inside the text. For Maupassant, the supernatural issues not from exterior facts, but from inner processes.
