Summary/Abstract: The body image literature has accentuated in recent years the considerable potential of self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987) to explain the mechanisms of negative body image development and the mechanisms of media influence on body image. This paper presents results from a study with 308 adolescent girls and 299 adolescent boys. The discrepancy between perceived actual body and subjective body ideal and the discrepancy between perceived actual body and media body ideal have been analyzed, as well as the relationships between these two discrepancies and specific negative emotions towards the body according to the predictions of self-discrepancy theory (body dissatisfaction, body shame and body discomfort).
