Summary/Abstract: The basic goal of this article is to elaborate and underline changed conditions in which modern businesses operate under the influence of a strong development and wide usage of the modern information-communication technologies. A new environment for doing business is defined as the Knowledge-based economy. Hence, we try to explain the term and the characteristics of the knowledge as a factor for obtaining competitive advantages. The role and importance of the knowledge management as part of the intangible assets management is stressed. Particular emphasis is placed on the so-called implicit knowledge, which becomes an increasingly important source of the lasting competitive advantages. We elaborate factors determining an organization readiness to introduce different forms of electronic learning as well as important characteristics of such a process in order to be successful. Modern information technologies decisively influence the characteristics related to the knowledge and skills employers request from employees, so a short elaboration of certain specifics was given regarding the functioning of the labour market
