The Autobiographical Accounts as а Self-Representation

Summary/Abstract: The author regards the various life stories, so common in the folkloristic field work, as verbal representations of the personal “image” of culture. The stories of an autobiographical type are given closer examination in the article. They are characterized as narratives, relating about events of life which function as а kind of а synthetic expression of the individual’s personality, ideology, life experience. Their communicative aim is the teller’s self-representation, mainly achieved by reporting on most important events from his/ her life. Although the autobiographical oral accounts are very intimate and subjective, shaped and animated by the touch of the narrator’s unique personality, there are certain sociocultural categories, repeatedly, though specifically interpreted, which from the special “language” of these stories. As far as the folklore bearers’ autobiographical oral accounts are concerned, these general categories are sex, kinship, family and home, ethnicity, religious and local identity.
