Summary/Abstract: The article investigates the past and the genealogy of the Costiescu family, a family of little boyars of the Buzău district. Matila C.Ghyka (1881 – 1965), diplomat, esthetician and writer, descended from this family on his father’s side, the officer Matila Costiescu. Through his father, he descended also from an old boyar family of the region of Oltenia, the Lăcusteanu. His mother Maria née Ghyka was a direct niece of Grigore V Ghyka, the last hospodar of Moldavia (1849 – 1856). Matila C.Ghyka was the author of several books and articles about the golden proportion, about the rhythm in the arts and in nature trying to explain the sources of beauty. He published also a novel and a book of memoirs. His wife Eileen O’Conor descended from the O’Conors, high kings of Ireland in the Middle Ages and from the family of the dukes of Norfolk.
