The Tradition of the Hagiographical Cycle about St Eustathius Placidas in Slavonic – Some Parallels and Common Research Problems

Summary/Abstract: The article examines issues and general problems for the study of the Balkan tradition of Old Church Slavonic translation of the earliest Byzantine Life of St. Saint Eustace (BHG 641 ). The hypothesis of the Russian researcher O. Gladkova concerning the time of occurrence and location of the Slavonic translation of the Life of St Eustace has been revised on the grounds of comparative analysis of selected parts of Slavonic and Byzantine texts. The analysis of the structure of the texts reveals full correspondence between the Byzantine original and the Slavonic translation. In the paper is discussed the possibility that Ms 700 of Dragomirna monastery is the only witness that includes the preface of the life in Old Church Slavonic translation.
