Summary/Abstract: This article represents the assessment of the economic potential of the northern regions of Russia. The uniqueness of the ecological role of the North in a global scale is highlighted. The article shows that the territory of the North is the place of residence of its indigenous people. Demographic potential is studied by quantitative and ethnic characteristics. The conclusion about its failure for the North economy in the near future is drawn.
