Summary/Abstract: The subject of the paper are the changes, which underwent in bilingual conditions of the geographical and personal names in Silesia. The article is divided into several parts that include such linguistic and historical problems as:– Polish-German language contacts in the Middle Ages, reflected in the geographical naming,– the role of the Frederician colonization in the process of Germanization of Silesia,– the growth of nationalist tendencies in the 19th and 20th century,– the results and consequences of the Germanization policy of the names during the Second World War,– the assessment of the German legacy of naming in the Silesian studies research.Such a broad perspective leads to a conclusion, that the medieval amendments of names in Silesia are of bilingual provenance of the unrelated languages. The linguistic relations were different in the Prussian period, within which the Polish language was in conflict with the German language and developed defense mechanisms. Various concepts of Germanization that were implemented in practice, decided about the fate and shape of the proper names in the region
