Summary/Abstract: The article has a character of a scientific essay, in which the author – in the first part – presents different opinions and definitions of the term „Eastern Borderlands”, which appeared in the Polish public debate after 1989. Thereafter, the scientist attempts to present the origin and nature of attitudes of Kresovians in the Polish People’s Republic. The researcher achieves it through a resemblance of the fate and conflicts around two symbolic borderland cities in the twentieth century: Vilnius and Lviv. At the end of his considerations, the author indicates the necessity and conditions for the verification of the fairytale myths of the Eastern Borderlands with the historical science
