Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the results of an empirical investigation of the internationalization of the Bulgarian SMEs in the textile sector. The study explores why and how the studied enterprises have internationalized their activities focusing on the following aspects: innovativeness of the products that are subject to internationalization, preferred foreign markets and the reasons for the preferences, mode of entrance in the foreign markets, motives for internationalization, management of internationalization, share of foreign sales income in total sales income. The empirical findings reveal the influence of the internationalization characteristics on the organizational performance of the Bulgarian textile SMEs. Drawing upon the empirical results the paper provides recommendations for greater specialization in the export of products with high value added.
