Summary/Abstract: Nowadays, the idea of leisure time is the subject of research for the scientists of many fields such as economy, psychology, philosophy, sociology and pedagogy. The pedagogy of free time or the education to leisure activities especially are under the research in the context of developing theories of the leisure time society. Recently, free time is much more often defined by the rise of existential pleasure, making unconstrained and free decisions which are connected not only with expressing own intentions but also with an unassisted management of independently chosen activities. It is translated into the choice and realization of volitionally appointed goals and tasks. Work time and spare time intertwine and condition each other. In the article the conception of understanding and defining leisure time is presented from the historical perspective. It is shown that planning the free time and making use of actions undertaken by the children in the cultural education, which is conceived as cultural activity in the broad sense of the development of cultural competence are highly important. The challenges of the future demand a lot from the education of the recent times, which is sought as the antidote to the problems of the 21st century human beings. Creation and innovations, these are the terms often mentioned in the context of the society development and the competence facing the challenges of the recent world. The author underlines the values of the artistic education, the education through art as well as the cultural participation which are highly meaningful in planning, organizing and experiencing the children’s free time that essentially is depended on the free time culture of the adults.
