On the History of the Bulgarian System of Tenses

Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the restructuring of the Bulgarian verbal system and the establishment of the resultative tenses. In our opinion the shift in the meaning of the imperfect that became a present in the past was the phenomenon that prevented the verbal system from losing the perfect in Bulgarian. In the other Slavic languages where this did not happen the perfect remained synonymous to the simple past tenses aorist and imperfect, replaced them and thus became the only past tense.
