An Unknown Anthology of Gnomoi in a Bulgarian Manuscript from the Fifteenth Century

Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the 15th century South Slavonic manuscript N 1/108 from the State Scientific Library in Odessa. The codex is a convolute consisting of different manuscripts. The last of them contains a collection of proverbial sayings unexamined so far. The author shows that the collection is actually a short excerpt from the Byzantine gnomologium “Melissa”. The textological analysis leads to the assumption that this manuscript preserves a South Slavonic translation of the Greek “Melissa”. In all likelihood the translation was made on Mount Athos.
