Summary/Abstract: Whereas on the one side of the well-known Poganovo icon the Thessalonian “Miracle in Latom” is depicted (it is also known from the narthex of the Bachkovo ossuary), the subject of the other side, where the Virgin Mary bears the epithet “Refuge” and where the donor’s inscription is found, has been interpreted differently. Most often it is connected with the Crucifixion, where John the Evangelist is shown young and beardless. The author accepts and amplifies the identification of the donor as the wife of the Seres despot, Elena Uglesh. For the subject, however, she advances another hypothesis: In the life of St. Gregory the Thaumaturge, written by St. Gregory of Nyssa, a vision is described. An old man, John the Divine, and the Virgin Mary appear to the praying bishop. She urges the Evangelist to explain to Gregory “the true knowledge of the faith”. Precisely this interpretation of the subject is supported by the historical situation during the last three decades of the fourteenth century. This again links the icon and the donor to the artists’ workshops in Thessaloniki.
