Summary/Abstract: The inscription was discovered during archaeological excavations of the Patriarchate in Veliko Turnovo. Only fragments of it have been preserved. The first researchers dated it respectively to 1292 and 1323–1330. The expression in the second line makes it possible to date the inscription more precisely. In Medieval Bulgaria the epithet “pious” indicated royal dignity and could only be used in connection with the name of the king or of the members of his family. The lower boundary of the inscription, 1291–1292, is indicated in the text of the small fragment. After that time person of royal descent were the king Svetoslav Terter (1300–1322), Georgi Terter II (1322–1323) and Ivan Shishman (1371–1393). It follows from this that the inscription was written in the years between 1300 and 1323, or in 1371–1393. Taking into account the archaeological data of the inscription and certain palaeographic features, the dating can be narroused down to the reigns of Svetoslav Terter and Georgi Terter II, i.e. l300–1323. The remainders of the signs on the second line of the small fragment may be reconstructed as I and E and have a tittle, giving the indiction – 15, corresponding to the years 1302 and 1317 A.D. With certain qualifications the inscription may be dated to this period.
