The Galati Prison as a Center for Political Detention during the Communist Period

Summary/Abstract: The Galați Prison played an important role during the communist period for Romania's oppressive system of political police, led by the infamous Securitatea. Despite this, it is less known compared to other prisons, such as Sighet, Aiud, Gherla, Pitești or Râmnicu Sărat. This articles intends to bring to light the history of the Galați prison from the 1950s period of the 20th century. In addition, it focuses on the stories of individual detainees who served a significant part of their sentences in Galați.
