SOME FUNCTIONS OF LOCAL COUNTER-INTELLIGENCE REALIZED AGAINST POLISH CITIZENS AND FOREIGNERS, AND TASKS CONCERNING FIGHTING SMUGGLING AND TRANSPORT PROTECTION IN YEARS 1956–1964 ON THE EXAMPLE OF SECOND DIVISION OF PROVICIAL HEADQUARTERS OF CIVIC MI

Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses some tasks realized by local services of civil counter-intelligence of the Interior Ministry in the years 1956–1964. They concerned working-out of defectors and persons refusing to return home, monitoring of transborder correspondence and direct forms of contacts between Polish citizens and institutions and citizens of capitalistic countries on the territory of the Polish People’s Republic, observing local reconnaissance trips and official visits of diplomatic personnel of western countries, analysing cases of illegal crossings of the border in the extent concerning likely intelligence activity, as well as discovering illegal channels of transfer abroad, fighting smuggling, and providing operational protection for transborder transport means. The fundamental source base has constituted files collected in the Branch Office for Preservation and Dissemination of Archival Records of the Institute of National Remembrance in Rzeszów. Internal publications of the department have also been used.
