Summary/Abstract: Poland, as the largest and most populous of the European states in the bloc (apart from the Soviet Union), having a common border with the Soviet Union and the growing aspirations to expand its autonomy within the Soviet sphere of influence in Eastern Europe, was one of the key areas of KGB intelligence activity in the region. The article presents the important role played by the KGB Warsaw Liaison Group (Mission) in the complicated system of monitoring of Poland exercised by the Soviet Union between March 1954 and October 1991. It was based on the unification of the official liaison functions (realized with respect to the states considered as the closest allies of the USSR) with conventional operational tasks. Their coordination at the Moscow headquarters was entrusted to a separate division of cooperation with the socialist countries. Apart from the institutional and legal bases of operation, the article presents also the general structure as well as the main directions and scope of the agency's tasks.
