THE DEVIL OF GARDZIENICE: THE DEVIL OF THE STORY. THE PROCESS OF STORYTELLING AS A FIGURE OF SOCIAL DISCOURSE

Summary/Abstract: On the 20th May of 2012 in Gardzienice village near Lublin, during my eldwork, I conducted an interview. An integral part of it is the analysis of the story “The Devil of the XXI Century”. This story, a personal narra- tive, symbolically encodes the local social con ict between the “Gardzienice ‘Theatre’” and the village people of Gardzienice and it refers to the tradition of the demonology of the Lublin Region. This story – a personal myth – is in this perspective an empirical indicator of the Storyteller’s social status. The “Devil” is the central, symbolic mediator of this story, because it visualizes the narrative signal of the social con ict, which is com- municated by the Storyteller in his story. The article presents the study of the social poetics and shows the hypothesis that the process of the storytelling is the gure of the local discourse of the con ict.
