Summary/Abstract: The paper introduces briefly the life of the last ruler of the Habsburg Empire, and sums up the main problems of his reign. Charles’ only two year-reign remained in the shadow of his great-great-uncle Francis Joseph, although he was a more remarkable personality than to remember him only as “Charles the Last”.
